In Left in the Midwest, 15 authors explore the roots of progressivism in the nation’s heartland. In her essay, Nina Gilden Seavey reveals the FBI’s infiltration and subversion of the anti-war movement in this in-depth companion piece to the My Fugitive podcast. The book is now available on Kindle and in paperback editions.

Now that the Super Bowl is over, let's talk about the four seasons of the Houston Herricanes with the documentary's director, Olivia Kuan! The Houston Herricanes were a part of the first women's full tackle football league in the 1970s. Their unknown story is one of commitment, courage, and strength. Despite adversity and hardship, they fielded a team purely for the love of the game. What they started is a movement that is still in motion today.

Cinematographer Olivia Kuan (First Period, I Blame Society, The Clearing) makes her first outing as a documentary film director with this spirited portrait of the untold story of these trailblazing athletes... and it's a story close to her own heart, as Kuan's mother was a Herricane. She will discuss the film's production and distribution processes.

"Mother of the Blues" Ma Rainey fights to assert her power while a defiant young trumpeter threatens to upend the order and claim the spotlight.

For the final film in our Stage to Screen series, WIFV Film Club will discuss MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM starring Viola Davis, Coleman Domingo, and, in his final role, Chadwick Boseman. The screenplay of August Wilson's seminal play was adapted by Ruben Santiago Hudson, produced by Denzel Washington and directed by George C. Wolfe with a score composed by Bradford Marsalis.
